The Social Spots and the Social Distancing Circles pursue the same goal: to make public space safe to use. However, the concepts differ greatly, as can be seen at first glance in the photos.
The Social Distancing Circles were implemented in Dominik Park in New York. They are circles of about 2 meters in size that were painted onto the lawn and are 1.8 meters apart. Since the distance is only maintained between the circles, but not inside them, this means that the circles can only be occupied by people from the same household. In order to meet with friends, the Social Distancing Circles are only partly suitable, because then a mask has to be worn inside the circle to minimize the risk of infection.
In contrast, the concept of the Social Spots aims to enable social interaction between everyone. The triangular pattern, which creates a distance of 2 metres between all persons, also allows family, friends and acquaintances from other households to meet and talk to strangers. Two people from the same household can share a spot.
In summary, the Social Distancing spots are especially suitable for families to stay outdoors safely and move freely within a defined radius, while the Social Spots allow space for much more diverse social interactions.
Depending on the dynamics of the location, a different concept is more appropriate and the combination of the two concepts should definitely be considered when designing larger areas.
However, the use of the term social distancing should be replaced by physical distancing.
